Pulakos and O'Leary (2011) discuss that a popular practice is to evaluate performance based on if employees meet the SMART criteria which is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound goals. The advantages of using SMART are to provide a customized performance evaluation based on each employees' specific job. Pulakos and O'Leary (2011) clarify that the method is able to remove subjectivity that may be seen as unfair in the evaluation process. The purpose of performance management systems are to help link employee activities with the goasl and missions of each organization (Cascio and Aquinis, 2019)
