Tamera is a 31-year-old, African-American female client who was court-ordered to a residential treatment program for 90 days due to her severe cocaine use disorder. As a result, she has lost temporary custody of her two children, ages 9 and 14, who were placed in foster care by the Department of Children and Family Services. She is on probation for an assault charge against her elderly mother. The case manager receives a call from Tamera's mother to ask how she is doing in her treatment. The case manager explains to Tamera's mother that she is doing great and will be released soon. However, Tamera discussed with the case manager that she does not want contact with her mother. Tamera did not consent by signing a release of information for the case manager to release any information regarding her treatment. In addition, the case manager also provided information to the Department of Children and Families and her probation officer regarding her progress in treatment. Tamera was not informed by the case manager that personal information about her treatment would be shared. Tamera has demonstrated progress with her treatment and will be ready for discharge soon. However, in preparation for transition, the case manager will need to address her needs by preparing referrals and resources to assist Tamera with her life after her treatment.
