Tap water containing 300ppm dissolved solids at 25C will be fed to an evaporator operating at 101.35kPa to produce distilled water. The outlet water will contain 1200ppm dissolved solids. 1000kg/h of saturated steam at 169.06 kPa is supplied for heating. A single effect evaporator with an area of 25m2 and an overall heat transfer coefficient of 1500W/m2K is suggested to be used for the process. The heat capacity of the inlet and outlet water is 4.18kJ/kgK. The liquid in the evaporator has the same boiling point as water. (a) Calculate the amount of distilled water produced per hour. (12 marks) (b) Determine whether the suggested single effect evaporator can be used for the process. (4 marks)
