This section is adapted from a story by Alain de Janvry. I cannot confirm its authenticity. For many years, the City of Berkeley had a food truck that provided free sandwiches. It always showed up to the same park, every day of the week. Everyone who was at the park could approach the truck and get a free sandwich, no questions asked. Notable about this truck was that its arrival timing was unpredictable. Sometimes it arrived as early as 10am, while other days it arrived past 2pm. It would serve the crowd and then leave for the day. They never advertised the schedule.

This is in contrast to the Berkeley culinary scene, where residents can choose from dozens of options within a few minutes' walk.
