Scenario
You have recently taken a position as a community service worker at a not-for-profit community organisation with a dedicated team of individuals and services committed to meeting their community's needs.
You are coming up on your first three-month review, and soon your supervisor, Monica Earnest, has invited you to participate in a two-way open and evaluative feedback session.
In your role, you have handled two cases at the centre and one case where you travelled to regional Victoria to visit a client in their home. From the beginning, you mostly worked independently, and the work has been challenging as this is your first professional position.
You are confident in your role but adjusting to real-world work after study has been difficult. You have felt emotionally drained and often tired at the end of the workday. The amount of paperwork has been a challenge to keep on top of, and you haven't had much time to make meaningful connections with your colleagues, which is one of the things you were most looking forward to in taking this position.
Besides the challenges, you have been growing in confidence and enjoying the work. You are getting better at time management and have begun asking for help when needed. The qualities you bring to the job are building strong rapport with your clients, being flexible and adaptive to the needs of the job, especially in terms of site visits in client homes. And on several occasions, you've spoken out as an advocate for the client in staff forums.
This week your supervisor contacted you by email to say that you have received feedback from a client that you have been working with. The client is a teenager that has been in foster care since he was very young. He has some complex emotional needs and challenging behaviour at home and school. His carers have asked you to support him as they are struggling at home. You have been assigned to his case and have been working with him for eight weeks.

Good afternoon, I've received verbal feedback from one of your clients that I'd like to share with you. Because of our privacy policy, I can't share their name, but I suspect you will know the origin of this feedback when you read through the comments. I received this feedback via phone call, so I've taken the liberty to write it down in our feedback reflection template. The way we deal with this kind of feedback is for the person that receives it to take some time to reflect on the situation and respond from a place of openness and collaboration. The point is to reflect without being defensive. Take the time to be empathic to the client's situation and what they are feeling and experiencing in life. Take some time to be empathic to yourself, so you can also connect with what you feel and need in this situation. Reflection is often challenging, but it is very rewarding if you open yourself to the possibility of learning and growing from the process. Complete the template with your responses to the feedback.
