You will be observed participating in a role play to confirm you can perform to industry standards and expectations.

You will demonstrate how you can engage in reflective practice to identify areas for professional improvement.

This task has two steps:

  • Read the email below and follow the instructions given by your workplace supervisor to complete a self-reflection using the Two-way Feedback Template.
  • Engage in a role play where you will share your self-reflection and receive feedback from your workplace supervisor.
  • Provide theRole Play Instructions to the person playing Monica. This role can be played by another learner in your class, family member, friend. You can record this session with free software such as Webex. Your role play should be no greater than 15 minutes.

Scenario

You have now been working as a community service worker for three months. This is your first review and formal feedback session with your supervisor, Monica Earnest.

You mostly worked independently, which has been challenging as this is your first professional position.

You are confident in your role and enjoy your job but are still adjusting to frequent challenges, and at times you have felt emotionally drained and tired. You are finding the paperwork difficult to keep on top of and would like to develop your time management skills further to help with this. You would also like more opportunities to make meaningful connections with your colleagues, which is one of the things you were most looking forward to in taking this position.

The qualities you bring to the job are building strong rapport with your clients, being flexible and adaptive to the needs of the job, especially in terms of site visits in client homes. And on several occasions, you've spoken out as an advocate for the client in staff forums.

Good morning,

It feels like you've settled in well here. I've observed you in a few situations with clients and interactions with some of the other staff. I know you've had some challenging cases, and it's not always easy to get into the flow of things. I think you handled the feedback that we got last week from your client really well. I've also heard you speaking out in meetings and seen you working hard.

We are due to meet next week for a formal feedback session, during which we will go through all feedback received, including the client feedback report you completed last week. In addition you will need to:

  • Fill in the two-way feedback template attached here to prepare for our feedback session. Fill in the first two columns - things I perform well and supporting examples. It's important to be detailed and specific here so that we can have a meaningful conversation on this.
  • You'll also have a chance to give me feedback, so be prepared with whatever you'd like me to hear. Remember, this is a chance for us to grow together, so I'd appreciate your honesty and openness. The more you share, the greater the benefit.
  • You will be asked to identify some values, beliefs and behaviours required to work effectively in your role. We'll discuss these values and see how aligned they are with the organisation.
  • We value and support continuous improvement. As such, I want you to access and review information on one current or emerging development in our sector and we'll discuss where you found out about it and how you are using the development to improve your practice.
  • And lastly, we'll talk about professional development opportunities, so please list anything you'd like to learn or think you need more support with to bring along with you. This can relate to the items you listed in the client feedback report or others you would like to identify.

During the role play, your assessor will be looking to see that you demonstrate the following:

  • discuss the evaluation and feedback with the supervisor
  • engage in reflective discussion in an open and evaluative style
  • recognise the impact of values, beliefs, and behaviours on their practice
  • engage in two-way communication
  • identify and plan for improvements of own practice based on feedback
  • accessed and reviewed one current or emerging sector development and identified how you use this to improve your practice
  • participate in the review process to upgrade skills
  • document the feedback received during the discussion in the space provided.

Submission Requirements:

Video recording of your meeting (no greater than 15 minutes) in mp4 format.
