PRESCRIPTION FILLING at PROVIDENCE HOSPITAL PHARMACY The Pharmacy at Providence Hospital fills medical prescriptions for all hospital patients and distributes these medications to the nurse stations responsible for the patient's care. Following is the description of the Prescription Filling System at Providence. Prescriptions are written by doctors and sent to the Pharmacy. A technician at the pharmacy front desk logs each arriving prescription then forwards it to the appropriate pharmacy station (lab, shelving, and narcotics). At the pharmacy station, a pharmacist checks the prescription in terms of dosage, interactions with other medications or allergies as recorded in the patient file. If any prescription is not appropriate, the doctor is called for clarification and the prescription is kept on hold. Otherwise the prescription is filled and the drug inventory is updated. If the inventory level of any drug is at the reorder point, an inventory request is sent to Logistic Department. The prescribed drugs are placed in a drug bag and sent to the pharmacy front desk and the filled prescription is filed. At the pharmacy front desk, a delivery slip in 3 copies is created for each drug bag. The first copy is sent along with the drug bag to the nurse station, the second copy is sent to Billing Department, and the third copy is used to update the log
