For the last four years Mikhail has been working as a team lead in a small grocery company. The company made a niche solution for a limited circle of wealthy clients. For four years, the company has achieved a certain recognition in the market, as a result of which it got on the radar of large companies. And as a result of long negotiations, intrigues and investigations, it was acquired by the American corporation "A".

Mikhail, along with his small but friendly team, joined the ranks of the corporation "A". The infusion went smoothly enough - "A" already had an office in their city. True, everyone had to get nervous at the time of the purchase of the company, because one of the former clients tried to lure the employees away. But "A" raised the offer on salaries by 1.5 times, and the employees suddenly changed their minds to look at the side.

In the new company, Mikhail found himself in the position of a manager who does a lot of interesting, useful and useless things in corporations. One of the new responsibilities was the formal appraisal of employees in July. The procedure was simple and went smoothly at first. The managers of four teams gathered, including Mikhail. For two hours, they built a joint team of their engineers from 1 to N, depending on who worked how much during the reporting period. All the staff members worked differently, but Mikhail was satisfied with the final layout: almost all of his guys were at the top of the list, and two, John and Paul, were in the middle.

And then a surprise happened. According to the procedure, the ranks and salaries of employees were opened further - to see if the employee's place in the list corresponds to his (employee's) salary. The salaries of Mikhail's guys turned out to be exactly 1.5 times higher than that of the rest of the engineers. Which meant that John and Paul, being in the middle of the list, did not earn their salary. Above them were 12 people with significantly lower wages. A feature of the procedure was that, based on the results of the discussion, 5% of employees should have received a negative message and a zero increase in salary. Seeing the picture of salaries, Mikhail realized that these two should be his John and Paul. The other three managers breathed a sigh of relief - that 5% were found, because of which the battle always flared up.

Michael imagined how he would come to John and Paul and announce to them that this year they will not receive a salary increase. Just yesterday he expressed his written gratitude to both of them for the submitted project. And to top it all off, John told him a week ago that he took out a mortgage. "It would be very logical to come to them and say: guys, sorry, it didn't work out..." - Mikhail thought as he left the meeting. It was a little consolation that the meeting was preliminary. The managers got together in advance to discuss everything, and not to waste time at the final meeting.

The final meeting, which will be attended by HR and the senior manager, was scheduled for the day after tomorrow. Oleg had two more days to figure out how to get out of the situation ....
