Technical Communication Type of assignment: Individual Points: 15 Successful completion of this assignment gives you the opportunity to demonstrate the following competency toward your class grade: technical communication. Technical Communication: Evidence-based writing that appropriately uses equations and/or figures/tables in the context of a written document such that: - equations are numbered and variables defined - figures/tables are captioned and explicitly referred to in the text Have you ever encountered an ethical dilemma while working as an engineer? For this assignment you will select an engineering ethics topic. Review the slides from the Ethics lecture for ideas/inspiration regarding potential topic ideas. Some potential topic ideas could be an engineering failure caused by negligence or even an emerging technology that raises ethical concerns about its future. Research the topic, beyond just Wikipedia, read newspaper articles and view news reports on YouTube to gain more insight. If you choose an incident from the past, keep in mind that the social/cultural/political climate was different. Researching articles and reports from that time will help with your understanding of why the incident happened. Provide background on the topic, its (potential) societal impact, and the ethical dilemma. The paper must include either a figure, table, or equation relating to the topic. The paper must include at least two quality references using the IEEE citation style and have a 500-word minimum. Description and procedure: The submission must be a written document regarding the engineering ethics topic you chose. This should be a cohesive, narrative, professional document. Reviewing the slides from class on Written Communication will help you fulfill the grading rubric's requirements. The format and content of the documentation is described in detail below. Format: - Title Page: Paper title, your name, EGR 102 section - Document should be written as a formal technical document with appropriately formatted section headings (i.e. bold and/or underline). - Sections to include: Background, Ethical Dilemma, Societal Impact, Conclusion, References Content: - Background - Introduce the engineering ethics topic to someone who is not familiar with it. Give an overview of what happened. Remember to include some visuals with your writing; e.g. figure, table, or equation. - Ethical Dilemma Describe ethically "what went/could go wrong" - Mention the moral principle that was/is the force behind the ethical dilemma (chose one from the Ethics lecture) - Societal Impact Was/Is society a reason for the dilemma? - Was there/Could there be a positive or negative societal impact resulting from this ethical dilemma? - Conclusion - Write a conclusion about the engineering ethics dilemma. How has this/How will it impact(ed) the future practice of engineering? - Give your opinion of the incident and/or results. - References: Include all references used (references should also be cited in the text of the report). Use an appropriate IEEE citation format
