The 2023 edition of the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report contains valuable insights into how technology is transforming education, its benefits, limitations and the challenges associated with its deployment. This landmark UNESCO report highlights the lack of adequate governance and regulation as generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools rapidly expand. It urges countries to urgently dictate their own terms regarding the design and use of technology in education, so that it never replaces the presence of a teacher, but contributes to quality education for all.
