TEP 1: Write a list of KSAOs for your leadership role

  • Think about a leadership role that is linked to your current or projected occupation. List the most important relevant tasks (3-5) and KSAOs (about 3-5 for each category, [you should have 12-20 total]) that you believe would be associated with that leadership role.
  • This should be included in your write up as an appendix. Be sure to state what occupation you are referring to.

STEP 2: Search O*NET

  • Look up the occupation you wrote about in Step 1 on O*NET' (https://www.onetonline.orgLinks to an external site.; see FAQs below for search tips). Look at the hierarchically ordered (from most-to-least important) listing of both the tasks and KSAOs associated with this occupation. List the top 3 tasks and KSAOs (3 per category).
  • This should be included in your write up as an appendix. Be sure to state what occupation you searched for.

STEP 3: Analyze the content from Steps 1 and 2

  • describe a brief analysis comparing and contrasting the list shown for your occupation on O*NET and the list that you created. You should consider the following:
    • Where do the two lists converge? Are there any discrepancies?
      • If there were discrepancies, why do you believe there are such discrepancies?
    • Discuss whether you believe there is missing information that would be pertinent to include and should be added to O*NET's description of the occupation
    • Discuss your opinion on O*NET's usefulness as a means of identifying and selecting potential leaders for this occupation. That is, should hiring managers use the information from O*NET's website to identify and hire leaders? Why or why not?
