TER126 : Thermodynamics of Materials Problem Set No. 1 March 15. 2022 Due : March 25, 2022 Name: Answer the following ask questions. 1. List some of the main activities of an engineer and how are they related to a study of thermodynamics? 5pts 2. An engineer who is entrusted with the task of producing methanol according to the CO (gas) + 2H, (gas) CH,OH (liquid) would like to know the answers reaction to a few questions, before he undertakes the design and development of a process. List some questions which can be answered by a study of thermodynamics. 5pts 3. Thermodynamics can be studied by adopting either a macroscopic or a microscopic approach. Distinguish between macroscopic and microscopic approaches. 5pts 4. For a thorough understanding of any science it is essential to have a good knowledge of the units of measurement. Every system of units adopts a few base units. What are the base units in the International System of units. 5pts 5. Define the base units (a) metre (b) second (c) Kelvin and (d) mole. 8pts 6. Derive the dimensions of the derived units-force, pressure, energy and power and name their SI units. Also provide the relations between the base units and derived units. 12 pts 7. If a long glass tube closed at one end is completely evacuated and the open end is immersed in a pool of mercury, keeping the glass tube upright, the mercury rises in the glass tube. At one standard atmospheric pressure, the mercury rises to a height (h) of 760 mm. If the acceleration due to gravity (g) is 9.80665 m/s and the density (p) of mercury 1.35951 x 104 kg/m, what is the value of the standard atmospheric pressure in SI units? is 8. According to Newton's universal law of gravitation, the force (F) between two bodies of masses ml and m2 which are separated by a distance R is given by F = G mm R Where G = 6.672 x 10-1 Nm kg?, is the universal gravitational constant. a. Given that the radius and mass of earth are 6371 km and 5.9659 x 1024 kg respectively, estimate the acceleration due to gravity on earth. b. Given that the radius and mass of moon are 1738 km and 7.35 x102 kg respectively, estimate the weight of an astronaut of mass 70 kg on moon. c. Determine the ratio of the acceleration due to gravity on earth to the acceleration due to gravity on moon. 10 pts. 9. An experiment is designed to correlate the volumetric flow rate of fluid through a pipe of uniform cross section with the pressure drop across a specified length of the pipe. In this experiments a U-tube manometer with mercury (p = 1.3595 x104 kg/m) is used to measure the pressure drop of a fluid, the density of which is 800 kg/m. At a particular flow rate, the difference in the levels of mercury in the two limbs is 20 cm. Determine the pressure drop. 10. What is molar mass? Assuming the atmospheric air is a mixture of nitrogen and oxygen in the mole ratio 79:21 estimate the molar mass of air
