TH1301C&D/Instructions for the 'What is God?' Paper/Dr. Ball Length: 2 to 3 pages Method of submission: Upload a Word document to Canvas Weight: 20% Read John Haught's What is God? How To Think About the Divine. Haught describes the human experience of depth, the future (what he will call 'futurity'), freedom, beauty, and truth in relation to the problem of God. Each has its own chapter. Which of these five experiences do you identify with the most? That is, which resonates with you or applies to you? Once you have decided this, write an essay addressing the following question: In the light of your own life experience, is what Haught maintains about the meaning and significance of this experience (of depth, or beauty, etc.) persuasive? That is to say: How might your life experience-both past and present-of this reality you have chosen here lead you to think differently or more productively about "God?" Why might your own experience confirm your choice as a "metaphor of God," as Haught puts it? Finally, in your view, has Haught given us an intelligible, plausible description or example of theological reflection, reflection on God (and on religion), in his text What is God? Note: You can refer to more than one of the five human experiences/chapters in your paper, provided that you focus primarily on one of them. Note: Answering the question posed does not presuppose or require a personal faith in God and can be carried out by those of any or no religious affiliation. Each student responds out of his or her experience/perspective in relation to the text. Prior to submitting this paper, you will submit a draft, your first effort at addressing the question above, at a time indicted by the instructor. Bonus points are available for having a session with a writing tutor from the Rattler Success Center's Writing Center (see syllabus).
