1. The system below includes a process reactor for a highly unstable process that is sensitive to small increases in temperature. The system is equipped with a deluge water system for emergency cooling to protect against an uncontrolled reaction. To prevent a runaway reaction during an increase in temperature, the inlet flow of process material to the reactor must be stopped or the deluge system must be activated. When the alarm sounds, the operator pushes the "inlet valve close" button to close the inlet valve and stop inlet flow to the reactor. The operator also pushes the "deluge system open" button in the control room if the deluge system is not activated by sensor T1. If the inlet valve closes or the deluge system is activated, system damage due to an uncontrolled reaction is averted.
