A great resource for communication is a mass communication notification system, you can have the system preloaded with alerts to send out. It could be for a natural disaster or an active shooter, lockdowns or evacuations. A good one is informacast, both administrators of the system and employees can send notifications so employees can notify employers if they are safe. That is important, some mass notification systems only send out messages and don't allow employees to send messages back
