This picture is showing the Oedipus complex or Elektra complex in females which takes place during the phallic stage. The phallic stage typically takes place between ages of 3 to 6. The Oedipus complex is when children have strong feelings toward the parent of the opposite sex and may be jealous of the other parent. (Watson Lecture No. 7) At this stage the child wants all of the attention from the parent of the opposite gender and does not want any of it to be given to the other parent. If attention is given to the other parent, the child may become upset and show aggression towards the other parent. (McLeod, 2023) As children get older, they end up admiring the parent that is the same sex as them and wants to be like them. This adult typically becomes the child's role model.
