The activity: Pick a section (front page, business, sports, etc.) and then find and circle the name of every woman you find. The name can be an article's author, a photographer, and even someone mentioned in a story. If the name is mentioned multiple times, only circle that name the first time you find it.

Now, take a different color pen or marker and circleThe name of every man you find. Again, the name can be that of an author, a photographer, or someone mentioned in an article.

When you are done looking for all of the names, count up the names of all of the women you found, and do the same for all of the men you found. What is the percentage of men to women? Is it what you expected it to be?

Do you find a different ratio of men to women in those different sections? Why do you think this discrepancy exists?What do the results from this exercise say about the media we consume? What does it say about our society? What would happen if news did not exist? Who benefits when news happens? Do those same people benefit when no news is happening?
