Defenders of free speech will often say that I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it. This is especially true in the U.S., which has a long history and strong tradition of protecting all forms of expression. Do you share this belief, or is it appropriate to place some limitations on free speech? Reflect on this by answering the following questions:

One example of speech that may be difficult to defend is hate speech. How would you distinguish hate speech from speech that is simply offensive, and does such a distinction matter?

Other countries have placed limitations on hate speech and have even prosecuted people for such crimes. Why do you think we have been less willing to limit free speech in the U.S., and do you agree? Is it more important to protect people from hurtful or false rhetoric, or is it more important to fully protect the free flow of ideas and minority opinions? Defend your answer.

Do you hold an unpopular position that you are afraid to share publicly, or can you think of a news story that many people view as fake news but that you believe is true or at least worth investigating? Describe your example and how you would feel if society attempted to silence or dox you for your belief.

Do you think anonymity on the internet has contributed to free speech in a positive or negative way? Explain your answer. Should people have to identify themselves before expressing a controversial opinion? Why or why not?
