The American Counseling Association (ACA) (2014) does make some room for ensuring that you are being clear about what relationship and role you are working in when you are doing crisis counseling.According to the ACA (2014) "Counselors explicitly explain to clients the nature of all services provided" (p.1). Now we know that many therapists/counselors never do crisis counseling with natural disasters. This type of crisis counseling is usually done by specialists or traumatologists who are specifically trained in crisis interventions. According to Bray (2021) "...crisis counseling as a short-term intervention to an acute situation with a singular purpose: ensuring that the client is safe and feels seen and heard" (para.1). The question then becomes can we provide a client with a sense of safety and allow them to be heard without being unethical in our interactions?
