The company that I decided on is Bath Iron Works. This is a manufacturing-based company that creates Naval Destroyers. This company has many value-added and non-value-added activities. A value-added activity is a step in the manufacturing prosses that takes raw material or ingredients and turns it into the finished product. A non-value-added activity is a step in the manufacturing prosses that does not directly contribute to the final product. Bath Iron Works has many steps that use raw materials such a taking sheets of steel and using them to build the ships. Another value-added activity is the design team creating a solid plan to send to the engineering department which is another value-added activity, and they will work together to create the design for every single section of the ships. There are also many non-value-added activities such as travel not just to and from work but also the travel of the employees going to other Navy Bases or G.D. yards. Another non-value-added activity is setting up the cranes or the Dry Dock. It is very important to have all these things, but the set-up, take down, or moving of these things does not directly contribute to the cost of the final product. Another non-value-added activity is billing the government for parts, time, equipment, or anything elses that needs funding. There are so many things however that go in to building these ships start to finish that management could very-well have a difference of opinion and what is vale or non-value-added activities.
