The Big Business Of Energy For The EV Industry
The energy storage industry is poised for phenomenal growth in the next few years. It plays an important role in weaning us from using fossil fuels to generate electricity. However, solar and wind energy are not consistently available throughout the day/year. Hence, this balancing act is very important as it helps to create a more flexible and reliable grid system. For example, when there is more supply than demand, such as during the night when low-cost power plants continue to operate, the excess electricity generation can be used to power storage devices. Battery storage technologies are essential to speed up the replacement of fossil fuels with renewable energy. Battery storage, or battery energy storage systems are devices that enable energy from renewables, like solar and wind, to be stored and then released when customers need power most. Our present discussion focuses on that.
Discussion questions:
- Tesla has kind of first-mover-advantage in energy storage industry. Do you think it can hold on to its lead? Can it dominate the market as this market grows? What do you think are main barriers to this industry? Can other companies enter this market? How?
- Who do you think will be the "new" competitors in this industry? As there is diffusion of battery technology and tremendous economies of scale, do you think power plants will vertically integrate into power storage? Are there any mobility barriers to that? Can Tesla enter the "power-generation" market and vertically integrate backwards?
- Has the energy storage industry maured? How would future technologies affect Tesla? Can it keep out the well finance competitors with competing technologies? As the battery technology improves what impact it has on the growth of the market?
- What do you think of the growing number of alliances between battery manufacturers and users? Do you think it is conducive or detrimental to to the battery storage industry? Why should we manufacture these batteries in USA?
