The Bugis are an ethnic group in South Sulawesi, Indonesia that believe in three genders beyond the binary, Calacai, Calabai and Bissu. Calacai is when you have more feminine sexual characteristics but present yourself in more masculine ways as well as taking on more masculine roles. Calabai is the opposite, having male sexual characteristics, take on female roles but do not have their sexual characteristics changed and refuse to be held back but restrictions holding back women. The final gender is Bissu, the Bugis believe that this gender who embodies both femininity and masculinity, is above the other genders in a spiritual sense. The Bugis believe that those that identify as Bissu are a bridge between the worldly and the divine. In this culture they do not focus on your biological sex but instead on what you chose to identify as.
