The Building Blocks of Active Directory

Active Directory can support an almost unlimited scope of functions and capabilities in an enterprise network, from small-scale operations to a global-scale multi domain enterprises. Microsoft took the concepts of X.500 and LDAP and molded them with a series of new components to come up with Active Directorys structure. To this end, Active Directory embraces the following concepts:

New Forests:

As already noted, the first domain installed is the root domain in its forest. You must be a local administrator on the server on which you install Active Directory to proceed. The following procedure describes the installation of the first domain:

1. From the Dashboard of Server Manager, click Manage > Add Roles and Features.

2. The Add Roles and Features Wizard starts with a Select installation type page. Ensure that the default of Role-based or feature-based installation is selected; then click Next.

3. On the Select destination server page, ensure that the Select a server from the server pool option (the default) is selected and select your local server from the list displayed. Then click Next.

4. The Select Server Roles page enables you to select the roles you want to install on your server. Select Active Directory Domain Services (as shown in Figure 1-6). If you receive a dialog box asking to install features that are required for AD DS, click Add Features to accept the installation of these features and return to the Select Server Roles page. Then click Next.
