The capital of the Mamluk sultans in Egypt was Cairo, and the ambitious Sultan Hasan is known to have built this complex on a plot of land approximately measuring $8,000$ square yards in $1356CE.$ It contained not one $($the Arabic word for "place of study"$),$ but four devoted to the four major schools teaching Islamic law, an orphanage, a hospital, shops, baths, and a massive mausoleum behind the qibla wall of the mosque. Ruling briefly as a child and again when he regained his sultanate as an adult in $1354,$ Sultan Hasan was assassinated in $1361.$ The complex, however, only includes the bodies of his two sons for his remains could not be recovered after his assassination.
