The capital of the Mamluk sultans in Egypt was Cairo, and the ambitious Sultan Hasan is known to have built this complex on a plot of land approximately measuring 8,000 square yards in 1356CE. It contained not one (the Arabic word for "place of study"), but four devoted to the four major schools teaching Islamic law, an orphanage, a hospital, shops, baths, and a massive mausoleum behind the qibla wall of the mosque. Ruling briefly as a child and again when he regained his sultanate as an adult in 1354, Sultan Hasan was assassinated in 1361. The complex, however, only includes the bodies of his two sons for his remains could not be recovered after his assassination.
