The Caroni Swamp has a plethora of biodiversity and is also a protected site under the Ramsar Convention. This is a 12,000 -acre wetland area which is the home to 20 endangered species (including the habitat to T\&T's national bird, the Scarlet Ibis). A proposal was submitted to the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) for the construction and operation of an ecotourism observation centre and hotel for tourists and nature seekers to have accommodation proximate to this site and part of this centre would include an area to relax and observe the many species of birds and other organisms using binoculars. This establishment is expected to accommodate guests that are interested in the early morning boat tours that are conducted in the swamp.
