In real life, they have sloped sides (like a trapezoid) but for simplicity, we can consider each basin to be a rectangular prism (see below) with the following dimensions: L = 380 feet; W = 40 feet; D = 16 feet. Identify the following parameters, if we assume that one basin is treating all the summer flow (100 mgd) or all the winter flow (30 mgd): Hydraulic retention time (HRT, in minutes) Horizontal velocity (VH, in ft/min) Overflow rate (OR, in gpm/ft and ft/min) Assess the L:W and L:D ratios and comment.
