The COVID-19 pandemic has led to droves of people leaving healthcare due to increased burnout and other reasons, including wages not increasing with inflation, a lack of respect and concerns about job security[1]. There is currently great competition in recruiting skilled workers, e.g., registered nurses, so organizations must be innovative when recruiting and retaining the best employees.
One way is by offering robust benefit packages to start. By compensating workers appropriately, organizations can show that they value people for their services. Benefits do not need to be only financial. An example is offering programs such as perks at work, which offer third-party discounts for services at well-known companies.
Another way that organizations can attract and retain workers is by ensuring that workers can take their breaks and/ or leave without any difficulty. Allowing workers to have appropriate rest times would prevent burnout and promote satisfaction with work-life balance. This is a big issue in healthcare, where staff often work long shifts at a time.
Other strategies to keep workers happy include offering modalities for career advancement. Workers appreciate when they have opportunities to better themselves and their careers, especially in healthcare. Offering subsidies when workers pursue further education is another way to retain and attract people.
