The Dissertation Journey Chapter Notetaking Guide Instructions: This guide is to help you engage with the textbook and pay attention to some of the important aspects from each chapter. For each chapter you are assigned to read in the textbook, you will find a list of questions in this document that you need to answer as you read the text. You may answer them directly in this document. Your answers do not have to be in complete sentences, but they should represent a complete thought. You may use bullet points, lists, etc. or whatever method you choose to answer the questions. Feel free to add spaces, etc. if you need more room between questions. When you have readALL ASSIGNED CHAPTERS of the textbook AND completed ALL the questions, you will submit the completed documentfor a grade. Chapter 1: Do You Have What it Takes? 1. In the first couple of pages of the chapter, the authors describe the dissertation journey and the attitude needed to accomplish it. Summarize what they said and reflect on what stood out to you the most in a brief paragraph. 2. The first \"hazard\" described by the book is procrastination. The authors then offer 5 strategiesto overcome procrastination. Summarize each one below: a. Challenges your excuses. b. Develop a Do It Now! Habit. c. Divide and Conquer d. Remove the Reward e. Discipline Yourself 3. The second hazard described is emotional barriers. The authors offer 2 strategies for overcoming these barriers. Summarize each one below: a. Reflect on your reasons for obtaining your doctorate [Reflect on your own here as well]. b. Establish a support community. 4. The third hazard described is Writer's Block [We will read a book in the coming weeks that believes writer's block doesn't really exist - more to come on that later ]. Summarize below each of the strategies for overcoming writer's block. Change the mode of putting down words. Get some physical exercise. Make two lists. Cluster your ideas. Write a crummy first draft. 5. The fourth hazard is a lack of concentration. Summarize each of the strategies below for overcoming a lack of concentration. Create the right environment. . Take regular breaks. Avoid multitasking. Take control of technology. 6. The authors list 6 essentials you need for the dissertation journey. Summarize each one below: a. Commitment b. Perseverance c. Stamina d. Positive Mental Attitude e. Courage f. Spirit of Adventure 7. Once you have finished the chapter, take a minute to reflect on what you just read. Below, write a short paragraph about what stood out to you the most from the chapter and some takeaways from the chapter that you will use in your own doctoral journey. Chapter 2: What Exactly is a Dissertation ? 1. While pieces of information in this chapter do not directly apply to Amridge (example: Your proposal will be much longer than 3-5 pages), most of directly mirrors what your dissertation will be. Use pages 21-29 to summarize what goes in each of the following chapter in your dissertation: a) Chapter 1 b) Chapter2 c) Chapter3 d) Chapter4 e} Chapters 2. Based on this book, what are some important things to consider when choosing a dissertation topic? How do these apply to the ideas you have for your own topic? Chapter 4: Choosing a Dissertation Topic 1. At the top of page 51, list the most efficient and effective practices to choosing a topic (Note: i cannot stress these enoughll You cannot just \"come up\" with a topic. A topic must come directly from published literature that is your only choice for a dissertation.) a. 2. List/Summarize the 7 criteria the book lays out for topic selection: 1. 5. 6. 7. Chapter 6: Organizing Yourself 1. What does "working smart" mean? 2. Summarize the suggestions the authors gave for organizing your time. Which ones stood out the most to you? How will you "make time" to work on your dissertation? 3. List and then define/summarize each of the 5 suggestions given in the text for how to "work smart." 2. 3. 4. 5. 4. What are some suggestions given for helping you find balance? Which ones stood out the most to you? Chapter 7: Mastering the Academic Style Note: I cannot stress enough the skills discussed in this chapter. Revisit this chapter, look at the examples, and use them to help you proofread and revise your own writing. Students spend a significant amount of time in the dissertation correcting the issues discussed in this chapter. Use resources like this book and your coursework to help you practice your writing, so your dissertation process goes smoother. You must have a high level of academic writing in your dissertation that will only come by learning writing strategies like what are outlined in this chapter and putting them into practice. If you struggle with this, you need to find an editor/proofreader, now. It is not your committee's job to teach you to write.1.
