It is the result of the high expectations placed on students to excel academically and succeed in their studies. While some pressure is necessary to motivate students to achieve their best, excessive academic pressure can significantly impact mental health. This paper argues that academic pressure can negatively affect mental health, resulting in emotional and physical discomfort, poor academic performance, and an increased risk of depression and anxiety. To protect the mental health and well-being of students, it is essential to understand the factors that contribute to academic pressure and the consequences of this pressure. This paper will provide an overview of the research on academic pressure and mental health and propose potential solutions to this issue. Thesis Statement: Academic pressure is a significant contributor to mental health problems such as depression, anxiety, nervousness, and stress-related ailments. The demands of schooling, combined with other aspects of life, such as family, social life, and leisure activities, can bring emotional discomfort in addition to physical problems. Students who are juggling many commitments at once, such as school, career, and personal life, are at a greater risk of having difficulty in each of these areas. This pressure can lead to increased stress levels, eventually leading to a higher risk of anxiety, depression, and sleep disorders for various students in the end (Schneider Atkinson, & Tardif, 2001). The pressure that comes from having schoolwork to complete can lead to a general deterioration in one's academic performance. Students who are under pressure from their academic workload are more likely to have difficulty meeting their deadlines, finishing their assignments, and effectively studying for their tests. Therefore, it is probable that they may have a fall in their academic performance, resulting in a lower possibility of succeeding in whatever they do (Xia, & Li, 2015). In addition to academic pressure affecting academic performance, it can also significantly impact mental health. The pressure that children feel to perform well in school can hurt their mental well-being. The constant need to meet high expectations and excel academically can lead to feelings of stress, anxiety, and self-doubt. Moreover, the fear of failure and the pressure to maintain high grades can create a highly competitive and unhealthy learning environment (Simons-Morton, & Barr, 2012). Body: To combat the negative effects of academic pressure, schools and families must work together to create supportive environments that encourage healthy stress-management techniques. One solution is for teachers to keep in mind the amount of homework students must complete and their mental health when establishing a curriculum for their pupils. Teachers can also provide students with counseling services or other forms of support to assist in alleviating the stress that is related to the academic work that they are required to do (Hester & Wardenburg, 2009). Another potential solution is for students to practice methods for managing stress, such as mindfulness and relaxation techniques, to minimize the amount of stress they are experiencing in their lives. This can help them cope better with the demands of school and other aspects of their lives. In addition, parents and other members of the family can help ease some of the stress that relates to academic accomplishment by providing an environment that is helpful and encouraging to the children in the family (Harker & Keltner, 2001). Some may argue that academic pressure is a necessary component of academic success and should not be seen as detrimental to mental health. Proponents of this perspective may argue that academic pressure serves as a motivating factor for students to strive for excellence and achieve their academic goals. They may argue that without the pressure to perform well academically, students may become complacent and not put in the necessary effort to achieve their full potential. Additionally, they may argue that experiencing and managing academic pressure can help students develop important skills such as time management, stress management, and resilience, which can be beneficial in their future careers and personal lives. In support of this perspective, research studies have shown that moderate levels of academic pressure can improve academic performance and lead to positive outcomes, such as increased motivation, better study habits, and higher achievement. For example, a study by Roberts and Gotlib (2017) found that a certain level of stress can facilitate learning and cognitive performance, as it prompts the release of stress hormones that can enhance cognitive functions.
