The environmental law team within your law firm is litigating several complex cases. The legal team realized that it cannot manually manage 1000s of pages of information for each case. In each of the cases being litigated, most of the documents can be found on electronic devices. The attorneys on this legal team are not familiar with how eDiscovery works or how to manage it.

The managing partner asks that you, as the firm's senior legal discovery project manager, and Carlos (so that he can learn from you) to research two different eDiscovery software products and explain the benefits of each product and why you think one is superior to the other. What exactly do these products do? What questions would you want to ask the software company to help your legal team make a good software selection?

Visit at least two of the litigation support software websites mentioned in The Top eDiscovery Software Vendors According to the Featured Customers Winter 2021 Customer Success Report Rankings article, attached. Read about their respective pros and cons. Then be creative as you supply relevant information about the hypothetical environmental cases in ways that replicate what your selected software could do to help the legal team to organize its eDiscovery information better.

Provide a succint technical analytical report , using the provided template and matrix. Identify your source material.

  1. Provide an overview and detail the key points of two different eDiscovery management software products (e.g., Everlaw, Logikcull, Lexbe, or any of the others that are commercially available) that you found through an internet search. Consider their value to the law firm itself and its clients (like its environmental law clients). Do not copy from the articles or others; provide your own personal critical thinking analysis.
    • Explain why you selected the two software products that you did.
    • Go to the websites of your two selected software products to examine them in more detail. If the websites have a free tutorial or online demo, then give it a try.
    • Within your report, explain what you learned from these websites, especially about each software product's purpose and functions as they may relate to the firm's clients and the law firm itself. Compare and contrast the features of each, as well as your own experience with each, if a free demo was offered.
    • Conduct your own follow up research (either in the library or through the internet) as part of your analysis here. Discuss why you went in that direction, including what you hoped to learn and how you sought unbiased information (or counter-balanced the bias that you noticed).
    • Based on your research, analysis and practice with these two software products, provide your opinion as to whether the law firm ought to consider adopting either of these products. Discuss the professional roles within the law office (e.g., attorney, paralegal, legal administrator, receptionist, data security specialist, etc.) who ought to know how to operate the software products as well as your perception of their user-friendliness.
