The example problem that you will work out is discussed in the slide, though you will be required to show more steps from start to end as indicated below:

Please label and indicate your steps the way they are listed below:

  • Step #1: Create the one-tailed or two-tailed hypotheses using the appropriate symbols (with Ho and Ha) and state the hypothesis verbally as well
  • Step #2: Indicate the default criterion probability which is an alpha level of .05
  • Step #3: Use the degrees of freedom formula that is appropriate for a two-sample t-test and find your t critical value using the t-table
  • Step #4: Write out your "t statement". For example for a two-tailed test you will state: "Reject Ho if t-obtained is greater than or equal to (insert t-critical value here and indicate the appropriate greater than/equal to symbols), or if t-obtained is less than or equal to (insert t-critical value here and indicate the appropriate less than/equal to symbols)".
  • Step #5: Since this is an experimental design, indicate 1) The independent variable 2) Dependent variable 3) The experimental group and 4) The control group. Why is it important to include a control group in experiments?
  • Step #6: Assess your sample data and identify the numbers that you will need in order to compute the estimated population variance equation for each condition (if this is already provided for you, simply note what the estimated variances are for both conditions).
  • Step #7: Compute the pooled variance (or weighted average)
  • Step #8: Compute the estimated standard error of the difference using the appropriate formula
  • Step #9: Calculate the t obtained result for two independent samples (independent samples t-Test formula)
  • Step #10 (Determining the results): Compare the t-obtained (t-obt) value to the t-critical (t-crit) value. If your t-obtained value is greater than or equal to your t-critical value, then the sample is in the region of rejection. If the t-obt is less than or equal to the t-crit value, then the sample is not in the region of rejection. State a brief statement comparing the t-obt to the t-crit value and state whether the obtained value is in the region of rejection or not.
  • Step #11: (Interpreting the results): Now that you have computed your results, you can make a statistical inference about your sample means (Condition 1 vs Condition 2). Is there a significant difference between the two groups? Explain your answer and discuss what this means in terms of hypnosis and recall.
  • Step #12: Determine if you will need to calculate a confidence interval. If so, calculate the confidence interval for the difference between the two 's, describe the represented by each condition, and provide a confidence interval statement in your own words.
