The famous Incan ruins of Machu Picchu are a 'must see' for most travelers who visit Peru, but initially, I have to say that I was reluctant. It wasn't that I didn't want to see one of the most breathtaking historical sites in the world. I could see that it was likely to be a once$-$in$-$alifetime experience, but in my opinion, Machu Picchu has become a victim of its own success. Hordes of tourists besiege the ancient site, especially during the dry season between July and October. Which month did I happen to be in Peru? August, of course.

As luck would have it$,$ torrential rain on the morning I was due to visit meant that virtually all of the tour operators cut their visits short. By the time I got there, around mid$-$afternoon, I had the whole place to myself.
