The famous quality guru, Deming, would say that inspection does not really add value, but companies do inspect raw materials that have been shipped, or their own products before they ship them to their customers. You would say a lot of inspection is done when items are:

high cost and produced in low volume

high cost only

high volume only

low volume only

all of the above.
