The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is an executive agency within the Department of Justice. As such, the president has the power to fire the director of the FBI. In May 2017, President Trump fired FBI Director James Comey. This was a very controversial move; some pundits accused Trump of doing so to prevent the FBI from investigating certain of Trump's relationships and business transactions. Although everyone generally agrees that Trump had the power to fire Comey, if he did so in an attempt to obstruct justice, Congress could consider impeachment as a consequence for President Trump. As it turns out, this action was not one of the specific issues cited when President Trump was impeached.
