The following assessment tasks use a simulated community service facility called First Access. To complete the assessment tasks, students will need to access information, templates, policies and procedures associated with First Access. These documents can be accessed on the First Access intranet (accessible via the website).

To access, head to http://firstaccess.eduworks.com.au/, navigate to the staff intranet and enter the following username and password prior to completing your assessment tasks.

Task Instructions:

For the purpose of this role play, you will play the role of Justin Hawthorne, who has been given the responsibility of creating the new Safety and Respect team:

  • One person will play the role of Raymond Wu, the First Access on-site Nurse.
  • One person will play the role of Monica Earnest, First Access Senior Counsellor.
  • One person will play the role of Dennis Tran, First Access Case Manager.
  • One person will play the role of Bella Reid, First Access Youth Worker.

Together, you will role play the first meeting of the Safety and Respect team.

As the meeting facilitator, ensure you cover the following points in detail:

  • Welcome/introductions.
  • Purpose of Safety and Respect team (may include goals, etc.).
  • Responsibilities of staff under the Incident, Injury, Trauma and Illness Policy and Procedure.
  • Communication strategies for building safety, trust and respect if a client is disclosing allegations of abuse.
  • Strategies/plans for training staff about their responsibilities in terms of reporting abuse of clients. This may include brainstorming, discussions, etc.

You must use the Meeting Agenda and Minutes Template, which must be submitted as part of this assessment task.

The role play meeting should take approximately 15-20 minutes.

Resources and Equipment Required:

  • Access to an industry-relevant workplace or simulated environment which includes a table and chairs.
  • Access to a laptop or a notebook and pen to take minutes.

Scenario

Today, the first meeting of the First Access Safety and Respect Team will be held.

Recently, there has been an alleged case of physical abuse of a client by a staff member of First Access. This incident has led to management creating the Safety and Respect Team.

The General Manager, Lou-Ellen Fox, instructed the creation of this work team with the aim of the following goals:

  • Educate all staff so they know what constitutes abuse and their legal and workplace obligations around reporting abuse.
  • Train staff in communication strategies they can use to encourage trust and safety for clients to disclose abuse.
  • Create a training plan to share this information with First Access staff.

At the end of the role play, you will assess your own participation and give feedback to each member of your group. Each member of your group will give feedback to you about your participation.

During the role play, your assessor will be looking to see that you can:

  • clearly communicate the purpose and agenda of the meeting
  • contribute to the discussions in the meeting by sharing your ideas and information you got from research
  • stick to the agenda of the meeting
  • participate fully without dominating or speaking over others
  • listen to others, and give each person time to speak
  • encourage others to participate by acknowledging the value of their ideas
  • use conflict resolution skills
  • take the meeting minutes.
