1st Content Item: Introductions - Due Sunday

Pick one of the two introductory questions to answer:

Question 1: Introduce yourself by telling us your name and the story behind it. Even though our online setting does not allow us to meet our peers in person, knowing the backstory behind someone's name can help you remember them when you see that name on discussion boards. If you are stuck, you might consider the following questions:

  • Who picked your name, and how was it chosen?
  • What is the meaning of your name, and does this meaning fit you?
  • What cultural/familial legacy does your name carry?
  • If you go by a nickname, how did you receive/choose that name?

Question 2: If you could download any new skill into your brain, what skill would you decide to download and why?

2nd Content Item: Assessing Arguments - Due Sunday

Return to the lecture on arguments (posted within our weekly lesson folder). At the end of the lecture, you will find different items that may or not be arguments/responsible arguments. Pick three of these items and answer the following questions about your selected arguments

1. Is this item an argument? Why or why not?

2. Is this argument a responsible argument? Why or why not?

As you assess the different examples of arguments, ask yourself- how hard is it to detect an actual argument (something that offers a claim plus reasons)? What helps some arguments come across as clearer and more responsible? In our class, we will privilege clear and responsible arguments, so it will be helpful to start identifying these markers early on.

Respond to Two Peers- Due Sunday.

You can respond to your peers' introductions or comment on their argument analyses. You do not have to cover both for each peer. Just be sure to connect in some way with two members of our class.

Based on your peers' posts, find someone with whom you have something in common. Respond to their posts, expanding on what you have in common. In your responses, include something that might make your peers smile. It can be positive encouragement for the semester, a funny (appropriate) joke, a compliment, pictures of kittens/puppies/otters holding hands -- anything to bring joy.
