The following is the initial part of an ongoing design problem that will be continued on the second assignment.

The problem posed is to design the worlds best toaster. Breakfast is arguably the most important meal of the day, so we would like to design a toaster that will make the perfect piece of toast. The task in this part is to describe and discuss the initial design criteria: objectives, constraints, and component Requirements.

As discussed in class, some of the suggested issues to address are:

What is the system model you have chosen and why? Open-loop vs Closed-loop control?

What portions of the real physical system are you modeling as the plant vs the controller?

What type of sensors and actuators will you need? What are the performance requirements?

What constitutes a perfect piece of toast? What are your measurement quantities (variables) and how do

you use them to measure the toast quality? How much toast should be produced and how quickly?

You can address as many or as few of the suggested issues, assigning whatever levle of importance to them as you see fit it is your design. Try to justify your design choices. Use whatever knowledge you have from this or other course work to formulate your design criteria. Feel free to do some independent research.

Have fun with this design problem, but please try to focus on a practical and reasonable solution.

Note 1: The report content should be a maximum of 2 pages including diagrams, tables, and figures.

Note 2: Hand-drawn diagrams and figures included in the typed report are acceptable. Any images not of your own creation should be referenced in a bibliography. The bibliography is exempt from the 2-page limita- tion if you need to use the full two pages for content.
