The four-step problem-solving procedure involves: Understanding the problem. This is important because it does allow for clarity on what needs to be solved. Devising a plan. This is important because it helps us with strategizing the approach on how to go about tackling the problem. Carrying out the plan. This is important because it involves us executing the strategy that was chosen. Looking back- This is important because it allows us to reflect on the process and solution and review to check for errors. Example: If John has 5 apples and gives 2 of the apples to his friend, how many apples does John have left? It is understood that John starts with 5 apples and gives away 2 apples. John gives away from the total number of apples that he has initially. Students would perform the subtraction operation which would be 5 (initial apples) - 2 (apples given away = 3 apples left. The teaching of this process in the classroom is where educators can use real-life scenarios and visual aids because this will involve breaking down each step, providing examples, and encouraging my students to practice with different problems as I guide them through each step to reinforce
