The fragmentation and nature of the health care system in the US are to blame for the rising costs. While some Americans have adequate insurance coverage, others do not. Moreover, Americans who are covered don't have many insurance plans to choose from, and are usually limited by the selection their employers offer. This lack of competition drives prices and thereby costs higher (Morabito, 2022).
