The German car manufacturer Volkswagen Group, of which Audi is part, has been advancing innovation by utilizing not just one but multiple technology megatrends to improve quality, speed, and cost in its automobile manufacturing process. Audi has used connectivity, data analytics, digitization, and machine to-machine technology to advance its competitive advantage in recent years. In its traditional approach to spot weld inspections, Audi would pull one car off the assembly line every day and perform a manual ultrasound inspection on a random number of 5000 spot welds. This was a cumbersome and time consuming process for quality control. To change that process, Audi developed welding controllers, which are robotic arms equipped with camera sensors that work alongside welding robots and technicians to monitor and analyze the quality of spot welds in real-time. That data was then applied to machine learning algorithms to generate predictions regarding the quality of the spot welds. Those suspected of not meeting the required quality standard were flagged for inspection and re-work (Greenfield, 2021)
