The girl told police that a man named "Ray" who was a friend of her mothers had kidnapped her from her home around midnight that night, taken her into the woods, sexually assaulted her, and then cut her throat and left her to die. The girl's mother confirmed that she knew a man named Ray Wike, and gave then his address.

When the police arrived at Wike's house later that morning, they saw a car parked out front that matched the description of the car the girl said Wike used to kidnap her. The police went to the front door and knocked, but nobody answered. Fearing that Wike might destroy evidence of the crime, they broke down the door and entered the house. They heard a person upstairs and ran up to find Wike in the bedroom, dressed only in his underwear, trying to crawl out the window. A pile of clothes was sitting next to the bed. As Wike was being arrested, the officers saw bloodstains on some of the clothes and seized the clothes as well.

Wike was charged with rape and attempted murder. He moved to exclude the evidence the police recovered when they engaged in a warrantless entry of his house. Was the police conduct lawful?
