The goal of the Web Privacy Project is to make it simple for users to learn the privacy practices of a Web site and thereby decide whether to visit the site. Site owners will electronically $$define$$ their privacy practices according to a set of specifications. Users will enter their own preferences through settings on their browsers. When a user attempts to visit a site, the browser will read the site$$s practices. If those practices match the user$$s preferences, the user will seamlessly enter the site. However, if the site$$s practices do not match the user$$s preferences, the user will be asked whether he or she wishes to visit the site.
