The GRE has two main components, Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning, both sections have scores ranging from 130 - 170. There is also an analytic writing component scored 0-6. Individually, the two sections have different population means, Verbal M= 150.24 and Quantitative M=153.07. Many graduate schools list minimum GRE requirements as individual scores (usually around or slightly above 150 each), but others post a combined score minimum which also hovers above 300. Although the GRE isn't exactly a standardized test like the SAT we can use a general population mean of M=300 and SD = 9. 6. You are a graduate student working in your faculty mentor's research lab. Your project is looking at the effects of preparation programs for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). The plan is for your sample N=25 to take the GRE once the preparation program is complete. To help set expectations for what the mean of the sample might be, your mentor asks you to figure out what range of values for the mean you should expect to get 95% of the time from the general population. Or in other words, determine a 95% confidence interval around the population mean. 7. Use the 95% Confidence Interval you calculated in question #6 and the research project described. What would be a sample mean you could get that would allow you to say that your preparation program had a significant effect because it would be a 5% or less probability that the sample mean came from the same distribution of sample means calculated in #6. (Hint: there is more than just one right answer).
