The Happy Man Lumber Company has a factory in 100 Mile House, BC and sales and distribution centers in Edmonton, AB and Langley BC and Missasaga, Ontario. For many years the companys best selling product has been pine flooring. In recent years sales of these products have fallen. The pine beetle infestation had forced the company to raise prices, and price was determined to be the one cause of the sales decline. To counteract this, a decision was made to introduce a new line of flooring made from Spruce wood. Mr. Saw, Mr. Hammer and Mr. Nail are all managers in the company. Each played a different role in introducing the new product line: Mr. Saw, in the 100 Mile House factory, made sure production line workers understood the specific protocols related to handling spruce wood as compared to pine. Mr. Hammer, at the Edmonton office, met with his Prairie provinces sales team and reviewed the advertising program that was being launched parallel with their sales effort. Mr. Nail, in charge of shipping nationwide, held a teleconference with the shipping managers at the distribution centres. He was concerned to make sure that product handlers at the distribution centres understood the particularities of handling spruce wood versus pine wood products.
