The initial reason for unionization was a way for individuals to fight against abuse, low wages, child labor, and dangerous working conditions (Sandroff, 2022). Utilitarian corporate leaders at the time had no problem exploiting workers if it meant higher profits for them. This is still the reality today in Africa where cobalt mining resides. Here there are no labor relations, unions or anyone supporting the people (Gross, 2023)
