The initial task was to answer the following: How are "typical" classrooms and curriculum disabling to students? As educators, what can we do to ensure we are enabling our classrooms and students for all students to be successful? Be specific.

Person 1 (Amarilis) Answer:

"Typical" classrooms and curriculum can be disabling to students with different common barriers. One of the barriers could be curriculum not being adjusted to universal learners. The curriculum designed by the educators should be engaging and safe fun learning for all students. All children are unique in their own way and not every child will learn the same, whether they are a "typically" developing student or an exceptional student. As educators, it is important to find different ways of representation to show our students different ways of understanding the curriculum and find different ways for student engagement and peer interaction.

Another barrier could be lack of interest. Our children will excel in certain subjects and have weaknesses in our other subjects. As educators, we have to find ways to engage our students in the curriculum that can interact with their interests and not make the student bored or uncomfortable in showing their strengths.

Another barrier could be lack of diversity in the curriculum. Our students range from a different group of cultures that come together and as educators, we have to find ways to engage in our education curricula that supports their needs in understanding the work at hand. Language could be a barrier as well, supports should be there to help assist the student, whether is is documented or not.

As educators, we have to find different ways of representation, design/visuals, and provide self-reflection and peer engagement. We have to have solutions for our different learners in a way that interacts with curriculum in our educational system.

Person 2 (Kayla) Answer:
Typical classroom and curriculum disable students because it is just a general education and they expect every student to be at a certain level and learn the same way. The typical curriculum for these students is designed for homogeneous group of students and is not able to meet different learners needs. As educators we could offer our students different ways to learn. We could offer them emotional and behavioral support for those students that are struggling in these areas, I would try my best to help each and every student and learn what it is that they know and how we can best help them on there academic journey, Allow modifications to certain assignments. Try to speak to them and teach them in a way they will understand what I am talking about. I would assess the diverse of the learning amongst the children that I am teaching and come up with strategies in ways that I could help them achieve there goals.
