The Maid Marion Gas Company repaired a mains gas pipe next to the Rose and Crown pub. The repair was completed carelessly which led to a gas leak in the area. Charlie, the pub chef, who was unaware of the leak, lit a gas stove in the pub kitchen and a few minutes later this caused an explosion and fire in the pub. Charlie was outside in the garden when this occurred.

Charlie$’$s workmate, Donald, one of the bar staff, suffered severe burns, together with a recurrence of the clinical depression from which he suffered some years ago. Charlie nursed Donald in the pub garden until the ambulance arrived. Charlie was not injured in the blast but feels desperately guilty about the injuries suffered by his colleague and has now had a nervous breakdown.
