The main responsibility of the project manager is to optimally manage the cost, time and quality and deliver the system to the customers

The time required to complete a project also becomes essential. The chance of failure increases as a project becomes more complex and takes longer to accomplish (Chandra, 2017). Sometimes, project managers are blamed for any discontent occurred (Ireland, 1992). This is not surprising as the project faces uncertainty, change, complexity, and stakeholders whose interests may conflict with the project (Aotaibi & Mafimisebi, 2016). The scarcity of lacking of knowledge, inaccurate communication and organizational support, and unfavorable surrounding, etc. can the reason of a project failure (Gupta et al., 2019).

At a high level, the main challenges are defining the scope and managing the timeline. To elaborate further:

Scope: these are very complex solutions, and once the sales organization has completed the sales, they hand over the solution to the project organization, this is done by both, solution description and technical specification, documents and a formal meeting between sales and project organization. If the scope is not being fully handed over and understood, it may lead to back and forth communication, between the two organizations, and at worst, incomplete or wrong delivery to the customer.

Timeline: Again, sales need to be clearing commitments toward customers, and explain these to the project organization. Also, oftentimes, these solutions include multiple third-party items, and ordering and delivering those is managed by the project managers. Delivery and installation of the total solution, can only be finalized and thereby accepted by the customer, only once all required elements of the solution have been delivered and installed. Hence the challenge of managing this diverse spectrum of deliverables. This causes challenges to deliver on an agreed timeline."
