The manager of a power plant proposes to co-fire (mix) perennial grasses (e.g., switch grass, miscanthus) with coal as a means of reducing sulfur emissions from the plant since perennial grasses contain essentially no sulfur. The plant engineer studies miscanthus, a different perennial grass. He finds that it has much less ash. It is 3.5 % ash with 15.7% of the ash is alkali. Again, coal contains no alkali. Miscanthus: 18 MJ/kg Coal: 28 MJ/kg If 0.83 MT of miscanthus is mixed with each MT of coal, what is the alkali content (kg/GJ) of the mixture? Answer tolerance: +/- 0.01 kg/GJ (Note: 1 metric ton = 1 MT = 1000 kg; also 1 GJ = 1000 MJ)
