The managing director of Huntingdon Life Sciences, Europe's most prominent contract animal research centre, was recovering yesterday after being attacked at his home by three masked people carrying baseball bats.

Brian Cass, 52, was set upon shortly before 8 pm on Thursday outside his home in St Ives, Cambridge shire. Police believe the attack to be the work of animal rights activists opposed to research carried out by HLS.

The laboratory, which uses 70,000 animals a year, has been the focus of the most concerted and effective campaign in the history of the animal rights movement.

Two men and a third attacker, believed to be a woman, all wearing balaclavas and carrying baseball bats, set about Mr. Cass as he got out of his car after driving the short distance from HLS to his home. He was struck on the head and received injuries to his arms as he fended off the blows.
